Funeral Service Programs
New Application Deadline – July 1
Canadian College of Funeral Service offers four programs:
1) Two Year Funeral Director’s and Embalmer’s Licensure Program
2) Two year Funeral Director’s Licensure Program
3) Two year Embalmer’s Licensure Program
4) One year Foundation Program
Part Time Studies Now Available: The licensure programs are considered to be full time with the majority of students taking seven courses per year. This allows a student to complete the entire program within two years. CCFS is now offering part-time studies for students that wish to work with a reduced course load. Program Information: Information about each program is found below.
Admission to the program requires applicants to:
- be 18 years of age or older
- have a High School Diploma or GED (transcript to be provided)
- have grade 12 English
- provide a Vulnerable Sector Check. Must be recent – within 6 months of the September program start date. Must be from the RCMP or local police authorities.
- provide two letters of character reference
- one reference must be professional (from supervisor, manager, employer, teacher, coach, clergy,…)
- references must know the applicant for no less than two years
- individuals providing the reference must indicate their name and contact information, the affiliation they have with the applicant, the length of time they have known the applicant
- references can not be from family members or colleagues working in the candidate’s funeral home
- reference letters must be dated
- be sponsored by a licensed funeral director and/or embalmer (sponsor agreement form to accompany application) (not applicable for foundation students)
- be immunized for Hepatitis B (not applicable for foundation students)
- A valid and current driver’s licence is most likely required once hired with a funeral home. Most funeral home businesses will require that you have a driver’s licence.

Information about admissions:
- Applications and appropriate documents must be received in our office by July 1.
- All appropriate documents and application fees must be included with the original application form.
- Incomplete applications forms will not be processed.
- The completed application form must be accompanied with the following documents:
- High school transcript of marks
- Two letters of character reference
- Sponsor agreement form (if registering for the licensure program)
- Proof of hepatitis B immunization (if registering for the licensure program)
- Application fee of $100.00 (non-refundable) paid by cheque, money order or bank draft. Payment by e-transfer or credit card may be made directly with our office.
- Late applications
- Applications received after July 1 may be accepted and will be reviewed on a case by case basis
- A late application fee of $250.00 will apply for any candidate who applies after July 1
- For late applicants that are accepted in the program, additional charges may apply for the shipment of textbooks and materials
- Applications received after September 1 may not be accepted
Funeral Director's & Embalmer's Licensure Program
- Two-Year Certificate Program (35 Credit Hours)
- Apprentice must be employed in a funeral home and sponsored/mentored by a licensed funeral director and embalmer. An apprentice must work a minimum of 16 hours per week although full time employment is recommeneded and standard.
- Intake every September
This program is designed to prepare student/apprentices for licensing as funeral directors and embalmers in various Canadian jurisdictions. A licensed funeral director and embalmer must mentor students who wish to enroll in this program.

Funeral Service Foundation Program
- 10 month program (12 Credit Hours)
- Employment and sponsorship is not necessary
- Intake every September
The Foundation Program is an exciting way to enter into the funeral service profession. This program is designed for those who are not sponsored or employed by funeral homes. It is an introduction to funeral service and is credited towards any of the licensure programs. The Foundation Program is intended to provide and introduction to the basic theory needed for study and employment in the Funeral Service Profession prior to securing employment as an apprentice. It is designed and delivered in a format that is ideal for those who are working or studying full-time outside of funeral service. The program is delivered in a variety of formats combining in-school sessions and on-line delivery, all designed to meet the competency standards of a Level I apprentice. Upon completion of the Foundation Program, students will need to find employment, register as a Level II apprentice, obtain sponsorship and complete the work experience requirements for Level I and Level II of their chosen program.
